Review | John Master's SPF 30 Natural Mineral Sunscreen

Friday, April 25

The John Master's Mineral Sunscreen has an SPF 30 and comes in a travel handy 59ml glass bottle. This is designed to be used on your face underneath make up, and ideally should be a part of your daily skincare routine. It contains a lot of beautiful ingredients, 5 of which are certified organic. All ingredients are bio-degradable and reef friendly. Mainstream sunscreens contain chemicals which are toxic to marine life, something very few people think about when they go for a dip in the sea.

Ingredients
Active Ingredients: Titanium Dioxide 7.5%, Zinc Dioxide 5.0%
Inactive Ingredients: aqua, aloe barbadensis (aloe vera) leaf juice*, capric caprylic triglycerides, ethyl hexyl palmitate, glyceryl stearate, glycerin, cetyl alcohol, jojoba oil*, shea butter*, panthenol, tocopherol acetate, allantoin, sodium pca, green tea extract*, magnesium aluminium silicate, hyaluronic acid, calendula extract*, ethyl hexyl glycerin, benzyl alcohol

* Certified Organic
Gluten Free

This isn't a 100% natural sunscreen, and there are a couple of ingredients that people may be concerned about, particularly tocopherol acetate and benzyl alcohol. I'm happy that the vast majority of this product contains natural and nourishing ingredients, and that there is a good amount of organic content, especially on ingredients like shea butter.

The Packaging
The sunscreen comes in a brown glass bottle, helping protect it from bright sunlight and preventing potentially harmful chemicals from plastic bottles getting into the product. The cream is dispensed from a small pump, which is always nice and hygienic.

The Sunscreen

This is a truly beautiful sunscreen that I've loved using as part of my skincare routine. It has a medium texture between thick and lightweight, but absorbs easily into the skin. It has a delicate smell which isn't overpowering, and has caused no issues with my breakout prone skin. If anything, it makes my skin feel healthier. It moisturises as well as protects, and I don't feel the need to wear another moisturiser or an oil with this. It preps my skin perfectly for my make up, and doesn't leave a white sheen on my face after I've applied it. As to how well it performs as an SPF, I recently went to Devon and my boyfriend caught the sun on his face. I was wearing this sunscreen and didn't even have a hint of sun damage. The next day he wore this and the redness reduced completely, despite it being another amazingly hot afternoon! This is a moisturiser to me as well as an SPF, and it's the only SPF I've used which feels like it's benefitting my skin in more ways than just sun protection.

The Price
The sunscreen retails at £28.50, and you can see why once you start using it. It feels like a high end product and delivers like one too. I'm personally happy to spend a bit more money on skin care if it means better formulas and better overall products. If you don't mind parting with a bit of extra money for your daily SPF protection, then you won't be disappointed with this.

I'm still unsure about a couple of their ingredient choices, yet on the whole I think this is an incredible SPF that contains mostly clean and nourishing ingredients. I have a couple of sunscreens from other green brands that I want to try out, but if they don't work I will be coming back to this.

You can buy it online from Being Content

Do you use a 'green' SPF? Any suggestions or alternatives for me to look into would be greatly appreciated!

    1. No they don't use nano particles and the minerals aren't coated either :) I'm not really a fan of the other John Masters products that I've tried (mostly hair care) but I do love this sunscreen. Thanks for the recommendations too lovely! :) x

  7. Sounds like a really effective product. Thanks for the review! I'm currently using Balance Me's Natural Moisturiser with SPF 25 which I'm really happy with. Goes on like a dream and smoothes, plumps and hydrates my skin. Wasn't expecting so much before I started using it but now I can't be without it! Xx

  8. Yowsa, that is quite a price! I think if you're a proper sun person then it would be worth it, but like Amber I'm mostly indoors and don't do too much sunbathing. It does look lovely though, and I've enjoyed other products by the brand so imagine that this is just as good :) x
